For those who want to take their popcorn game to the next level, here’s how to grow your own popcorn:

Choose the Right Variety

There are several varieties of popcorn, such as Tom Thumb, Strawberry, Robust, and Ladyfinger. Look for a variety suitable for your growing region and taste preferences.

Prep Your Soil and Watering

Popcorn requires well-draining soil and consistent watering. Ensure the soil temperature is above 60°F with a pH of 5.8 to 7.0 for optimal germination—and add compost or manure to improve nutrient levels. Be careful not to overwater, as this can cause root rot.

Location, Location, Location

Popcorn requires full sunlight, so choose a location that gets a minimum of 6-8 hours of direct sunlight in a day. Make sure to avoid planting in areas with high winds, as they can cause the stalks to break.

Planting Time

Plant popcorn seeds in late spring or early summer, after the last frost. Space the seeds 7-8 inches apart and 1-2 inches deep. Cover with soil and water gently. Within a few days, you should start seeing some sprouts!

Maintenance

Keep your popcorn plants healthy and happy by weeding regularly and mulching around the base of the plants to retain moisture.

Fertilize during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer and side-dress with nitrogen-rich fertilizer when the plants are about knee-high to promote vigorous growth.

Harvesting Time

Your popcorn is ready to harvest when the kernels are well-colored, fully mature, and firm. The husks at this time should also be completely dry.

Remove the husks and dry the cobs in a well-ventilated area for 4-6 weeks. Once the kernels have dried up, try to pop some of them to confirm if they’re good to go. If most of them don’t pop, give them some more time (maybe a week or so) and try again!

Pop, Pop, Pop!

Now that you’ve grown your popcorn, it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. While most of us are familiar with popping popcorn using a microwave, you can also use a stovetop or an air popper. The result will be the same—delicious, homemade popcorn.

Stovetop

To pop popcorn on the stovetop, you’ll need a large pot with a lid, some oil, and of course, your popcorn kernels.

Heat a few tablespoons of oil in the pot over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, add a small handful of popcorn kernels and cover the pot with the lid. As the popcorn starts to pop, gently shake the pot to ensure that all the kernels are evenly coated in oil.

Once the popping slows down (1 to 2 seconds), remove the pot from the heat and carefully pour the popcorn into a bowl.

Air Popper

An air popper is a machine specifically designed to pop popcorn. It uses hot air to pop the kernels, so there’s no need for oil or other additives.

To use an air popper, simply add your popcorn kernels to the machine and turn it on. As the popcorn pops, it will be blown out of the popping chute into a bowl. Once all the kernels have popped, season your popcorn as desired.
